Depardieu indicted in France for rape

The 76-year-old actor accused by actress Charlotte Arnould, who filed a complaint in 2018

The French case – A French investigating judge has ordered the indictment of Gérard Depardieu, cinema icon, accused of raping and sexually assaulting actress Charlotte Arnould in August 2018. The case comes on top of the 76-year-old actor’s conviction last May for sexually assaulting two women on a film set in 2021, for which he received an 18-month suspended sentence. More than a dozen women have accused him of abuse in recent years, irreversibly damaging his public image.

Arnould, who filed a complaint in 2018, commented: ‘Seven years later, seven years of horror and hell… I think I’m having trouble realising how huge this is. I’m relieved.’ Her lawyer, Carine Durrieu-Diebolt, explained that the proceedings concern two alleged incidents of rape by digital penetration that took place at Depardieu’s Paris home. ‘It is a form of judicial truth for Charlotte pending the criminal trial,’ she added. The trial date has not yet been set.

The case was initially dismissed due to insufficient evidence, but Arnould brought a civil action and a judicial investigation was opened in 2020. In 2021, the actress publicly denounced the actor, saying she had been assaulted twice when she was 22 and suffering from anorexia. Depardieu has always denied the allegations, claiming that the relationship was consensual. In a letter to the newspaper Le Figaro in 2023, he reiterated: “I have never abused a woman, there has never been any coercion or violence”.

Legal troubles in Italy too – Depardieu will also have to face Italian justice. In May 2024, he was accused of punching 80-year-old paparazzo Rino Barillari three times in the face in a bar in Rome after the latter attempted to photograph him. The photographer suffered an injury to his eyebrow and was discharged from hospital with a ten-day prognosis. The actor’s lawyer claimed that Barillari had pushed Depardieu’s partner, Magda Vavrusova. The photographer filed a complaint.
