Trump Presses Senate on Daylight Saving Time Protection Act
President urges bipartisan support for legislation to end twice-yearly clock changes, accusing Sen. Tom Cotton of blocking a measure already approved by the House
President Donald Trump intensified his campaign to eliminate the twice-yearly clock change, urging the Senate to take up what he calls the “End the Clock Change Act,” formally known as the Daylight Saving Time Protection Act, and portraying the issue as a rare opportunity for bipartisan agreement.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump appealed to both Republicans and Democrats to move forward with legislation that would permanently end the practice of changing clocks twice a year. He described the current system as “an absurd procedure” that imposes significant costs on the country while affecting public safety, personal well-being, sports and a wide range of daily activities.
The president argued that public support for ending the practice is overwhelming, maintaining that most Americans would rather have an additional hour of daylight in the evening than in the morning. He also highlighted recent congressional action, noting that the House passed the measure on July 14, 2026, by a vote of 308-117 with support from lawmakers in both parties.
Trump said the legislation now awaits action in the Senate and could deliver what he characterized as another major bipartisan victory. He reserved particular criticism for Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, claiming the proposal remains stalled because of the senator for reasons he described as unknown.
The president’s case against the clock change extended well beyond politics. He asserted that Americans are tired of adjusting their clocks twice each year and argued that even many farmers would welcome additional evening daylight during harvest periods.
Trump also pointed to what he described as the substantial financial burden associated with the time shift. In locations that operate watchtowers and in hard-to-reach areas, he said, the costs can reach into the millions of dollars. He further cited research that he said links the anxiety caused by the clock change to negative health effects.
According to Trump, medical, criminal justice and economic studies have demonstrated clear benefits from ending the semiannual time adjustment while keeping an extra hour of evening daylight. He said such a move would help reduce robbery and homicide rates, lower the number of traffic accidents, particularly those involving pedestrians, and decrease the risk of heart problems, strokes and seasonal depression.
The president also argued that permanent daylight saving time would make children’s trips to and from school safer, allow families more time together, support extracurricular activities and provide economic benefits to industries including sports, fitness, tourism, retail and restaurants. Additional evening daylight, he said, would also help reduce energy bills.
Trump concluded by calling for the country to stop changing clocks altogether and leave the current time arrangement in place permanently. Framing the issue as one that transcends party lines, he argued that Republicans, Democrats and independents all share the same frustration with the twice-yearly adjustment.
“With a 100% approval rating,” Trump wrote, “nobody wants to change the clocks twice a year. This is an issue that Republicans, Democrats and Independents can all come together on.”
