Putin–Trump phone call on Ukraine: leaders hold “frank and constructive” talks

The Russian president outlines what Washington could “concretely” do to end the fighting, while Trump pushes for a rapid resolution and a reset in bilateral ties

A new one‑hour conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump took place today, described by Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov as “constructive and very frank.” According to Ushakov, the two leaders exchanged views on the recent visits to Moscow and Kyiv by U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

During the call, Putin outlined his position on what the United States could “concretely” do to accelerate an end to the fighting in Ukraine. He also reiterated that Russia has no aggressive plans toward Europe, arguing that speculation about a “Russian threat” serves as a pretext for the European Union to increase support for Kyiv and expand military spending.

Trump, for his part, stressed the importance of a rapid conclusion to the conflict. He said he is committed to achieving a breakthrough during his presidency and believes that ending the war would immediately pave the way for a full restoration of U.S.–Russia relations, including commercial ties that he described as potentially highly beneficial for both countries.

The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact and to speak by phone whenever necessary. Ushakov emphasized that they also committed to advancing work on humanitarian issues, including exchanges of detained and convicted individuals. “It is worth noting that during the phone conversation, it was agreed to continue work on resolving so‑called humanitarian issues, including exchanges of detained and convicted persons,” he told reporters.

Ushakov added that Putin acknowledged the efforts of Melania Trump in supporting the return of both Russian and Ukrainian children to their families.

According to the Kremlin adviser, Putin provided an “objective analysis” of the situation in the area of what Moscow calls its “special military operation,” outlining the prospects for achieving its objectives. He also detailed what actions the United States could take to help bring the military operations to an end more quickly.
