Meghan Markle wants nine bedrooms for new UK home with Harry
The Sussexes have returned to Britain after six years in the US, but their search for a permanent residence is still underway
Meghan Markle has set out a demanding wish list for the new home she and Prince Harry are seeking in Britain, with the Duchess of Sussex reportedly looking for a property with nine bedrooms and a film studio.
The couple returned to the UK with their children after six years in the United States, arriving last Wednesday at Birmingham Airport before traveling in a convoy of blacked-out SUVs to the home of a family friend on the edge of the Cotswolds. The stay is intended to be temporary as they search for a permanent residence.
According to reports cited by the Daily Mail, Meghan has a particularly clear idea of what she wants from the property. The nine-bedroom requirement would match the number of bedrooms in the Sussexes’ $15 million Montecito estate, where they were still living until a week ago.
Harry, meanwhile, is said to have different priorities. His preference is reportedly for a property with substantial land and, crucially, no public or private pathway running through it, in order to maximize the family’s privacy.
Despite reports that the couple had already placed an option on a house worth £12 million, three separate sources said no deal has yet been completed.
The Sussexes’ financial position also appears not to be limiting their search. Despite having stepped back from their royal roles and facing difficulties surrounding their production company, the couple are reportedly prepared to allocate a “huge budget” to their new British home.
The property search could leave Harry and Meghan with three homes. The couple are not believed to be planning to sell their Montecito estate, while they also have a £6.2 million vacation property in Portugal. Their eventual UK residence would therefore become their third property.
The possibility of a sale of the California estate has nonetheless generated speculation in the United States. A luxury real estate professional in Santa Barbara told the New York Post that there are rumors the Montecito property could eventually be sold through a private transaction, adding that any agent would want to secure the listing.
For now, however, the Sussexes have yet to finalize their new home in Britain.
