The former Hollywood mogul receives a new prison sentence after a retrial, closing another chapter in a case that became synonymous with the MeToo era
Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced former Hollywood producer whose downfall became a defining moment of the MeToo movement, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the 2006 sexual assault of former television production assistant Miriam Haley in his Manhattan apartment.
The sentence marks the latest ruling in a case that has wound through years of appeals, legal challenges and retrials. Weinstein, 74, was convicted again in 2025 after New York’s highest court overturned his landmark 2020 conviction.
Prosecutors had sought a substantially longer punishment. New York Deputy District Attorney Nicole Blumberg asked the court to impose a 20-year prison term, followed by five years of supervised release.
Weinstein, speaking before sentencing, expressed remorse toward Haley. “I live with many regrets and I sincerely apologize for my actions,” he told the court.
His attorneys, meanwhile, urged the judge to limit the sentence to nine years, arguing that Weinstein’s deteriorating health made a lengthy prison term excessive. The defense cited multiple medical conditions, including a blood cancer diagnosis and heart disease.
Before the court handed down its decision, Haley delivered a victim impact statement describing the lasting consequences of the assault. According to The Guardian, she spoke of years marked by harassment, humiliation and public attacks, accusing Weinstein, members of his legal team and podcasters she believes were paid to damage her reputation of contributing to that ordeal.
Haley told the judge that the years following the assault had already amounted to “a life sentence” and asked that reality be reflected in the punishment imposed.
Judge Curtis Farber framed the case not only as a criminal proceeding but also as a defining element of Weinstein’s legacy. “He had everything. His legacy could have been sealed by greatness. But he burned it all down by assaulting Miriam Haley,” Farber said before delivering the sentence.
The ruling comes after a dramatic reversal in the legal saga surrounding Weinstein. In 2020, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting Haley and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann.
That conviction was overturned in 2024 when New York’s Court of Appeals ruled that the original trial had been compromised by testimony from women who accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct but were not complainants in the case.
Weinstein was retried the following year and once again found guilty of a sexual offense involving Haley, leading to the 15-year prison sentence imposed by the court.
