Clacton votes with 34 candidates as Farage seeks a new mandate

The Essex by-election features a record field, a ballot paper nearly one meter long and the absence of Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Greens

The Clacton by-election goes to the polls with 34 candidates competing for a parliamentary seat and a ballot paper nearly one meter long, the longest ever printed in British electoral history. The contest has turned the coastal Essex town into an unexpected center of political and media attention in the United Kingdom.

The election was triggered by the voluntary resignation of Nigel Farage, who had won the seat for Reform UK in 2024 with a decisive 46% of the vote. Conservative candidate Giles Watling received 27%, while Labour’s Jovan Owusu-Nepaul secured 16%.

Farage, the leader of Reform UK and one of the central figures of the Brexit campaign, chose to effectively reset his mandate by triggering a new election while facing parliamentary scrutiny over his finances.

The investigation concerns a £5 million “personal gift” from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, as described by the two men, as well as alleged undisclosed financial support from George Cottrell, a former close associate of Farage who was previously convicted of fraud in the United States.

Farage has argued that he was not required to declare the money because it was received before he was elected to Parliament and was intended exclusively for his personal security.

Presenting himself as the target of excessive media and institutional scrutiny, Farage has framed the contest as a battle between “the people” and “the establishment.” His appeal to Clacton voters is direct: he wants them to judge his record at the ballot box and settle the questions surrounding his mandate.

Instead, the campaign has taken an unexpected turn.

Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens have chosen to boycott the election, describing it as a “farce” and declining to field candidates. Their absence has left the contest dominated by Farage, independent candidates and figures from smaller political movements.

Among them, Count Binface has emerged as the most unusual challenger.

The character is portrayed by comedian Jonathan David Harvey, who presents himself as an “intergalactic space warrior” and campaigns wearing a cape and a trash can on his head. In the absence of the main parties, Binface has become, paradoxically, one of the most visible alternatives to Farage.

His platform is deliberately absurd. Among his proposals is a pledge to set the price of ice cream at 99 pence. The campaign is intended as political satire, using deliberately exaggerated policies to expose what Binface presents as contradictions and absurdities within the political system.

The candidacy has even attracted tactical support from some voters who oppose Farage and see Binface as the most visible vehicle for challenging him in a contest without candidates from the major parties.

Other candidates include Laurence Fox of the Reclaim Party, which describes its objective as returning to the public what it says has been taken from them by those sitting in Westminster. Local activists are also competing, alongside three candidates from the Monster Raving Loony Party, which defines itself as a movement made up of “mad and rabid monsters.”

The result is an election that combines a serious political test for Farage with an unusually large amount of political theater.

Farage remains the central figure. His chances of winning are considered extremely strong, with polls putting him comfortably ahead and his campaign relying on a loyal base of supporters.

Clacton’s political history gives him an additional advantage. The constituency was strongly pro-Brexit in the 2016 referendum, when 70% of voters chose to leave the European Union. That political identity remains an important part of Farage’s appeal in the area.

A decisive victory would give him a fresh parliamentary mandate and strengthen his position after the controversy surrounding his finances. It would also allow the Reform UK leader to return to Parliament with a result that he could present as a direct verdict from the voters of Clacton.
