Russia’s advance stalls in Ukraine as battlefield gains collapse despite heavy losses

New data from military analysts show a dramatic slowdown in Russian territorial gains, while casualties and equipment losses continue to rise sharply across the front lines

Russia’s military advance in Ukraine has slowed to a near standstill, according to new battlefield assessments, even as Moscow continues to sustain heavy losses in its ongoing war effort.

Analyses from the Institute for the Study of War in Washington indicate that Russian forces are gaining only minimal ground compared with previous phases of the conflict, marking a sharp decline in operational momentum.

In June, Russian troops reportedly seized or infiltrated 30.42 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. That figure stands in stark contrast to the 481.25 square kilometers recorded during the same period last year. On a daily average, the pace has fallen from 16.04 square kilometers to just 1.01.

The slowdown is not an isolated fluctuation but part of a broader trend that began in November, particularly visible in sectors such as Kupyansk and Oleksandrivka, where Ukrainian defensive and counteroffensive actions have so far prevented meaningful breakthroughs.

Over a longer timeframe, the disparity becomes even clearer. Between January and June of the previous year, Russian forces took control of 2,189.87 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. In the same period of 2026, the figure dropped to 622.60 square kilometers, equivalent to just 28.43 percent of the prior year’s gains.

At the same time, the cost of these limited advances has increased significantly. Data from the Ukrainian General Staff report 39,490 Russian casualties in June alone, averaging 1,298 losses for each square kilometer gained or infiltrated. In the same month last year, casualties stood at 32,680, or 68 per square kilometer.

Equipment losses have followed a similar trajectory. Russian forces lost 12,867 vehicles and armored units in June, compared to 3,395 in the same month of the previous year, a nearly fourfold increase. Drone losses also surged dramatically, rising more than thirteenfold year-on-year.

The figures suggest an increasingly imbalanced war of attrition, in which Russia’s territorial gains are shrinking while operational costs continue to rise, reflecting mounting pressure on Moscow’s military capacity despite its sustained offensive posture.
