Tragedy in Kerr County: Camp Mystic summer camp devastated by flooding of the Guadalupe River. Director also dead. Governor Abbott requests federal aid

The toll from the devastating floods that hit Texas is rising. Authorities have confirmed at least 50 victims, including 15 children, and the disappearance of 27 girls attending a Christian summer camp along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, the area hardest hit by the flooding.

According to Sheriff Larry Leitha, 43 bodies have been recovered in Kerr County alone, while four other people have died in Travis County, two in Burnet and one in Tom Green. Among the victims are the owner and director of Camp Mystic, where about 750 girls were staying at the time of the tragedy. The manager of a second summer camp in the area has also died.

Rescue operations continue unabated. Texas Civil Protection Director Nim Kidd confirmed that dozens of teams are searching the river for survivors and bodies: ‘We will continue the search until all missing persons are found.’

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of natural disaster and asked the federal government for additional resources and logistical support. ‘We are facing one of the worst tragedies in recent years,’ he wrote in a message posted on X. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued new warnings, signalling the possibility of further rain in the coming hours.
