Canadian PM Carney announces early elections: ‘Strong mandate needed’

Mark Carney, Canada’s new prime minister, sets elections for 28 April and responds to Trump’s statements

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially announced early elections, to be held on 28 April. During a press conference, Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau at the helm of the Liberals and the government a fortnight ago, declared the need to obtain a ‘strong and positive mandate’ from the Canadian people to face the challenges ahead.

‘We face a complex situation and there is much to be done to keep Canada safe,’ the premier said. Among the most relevant issues that prompted the early election decision is national security, with Carney wanting to clarify the country’s position on Donald Trump’s recent statements.

Indeed, the American president stated that ‘Canada is not a real country’ and insinuated the idea of a possible annexation. Carney promptly responded firmly: ‘We will not allow that to happen. Canada is strong and independent and will continue to be so’.
