Ontario cancels contract with Starlink after Trump’s tariffs

Canadian province revokes C$100m deal with Elon Musk’s satellite internet service

In response to new trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, the Canadian province of Ontario announced the revocation of its contract with Starlink, the satellite Internet service owned by Elon Musk. The decision, reported by the New York Times, represents one of the first concrete measures taken by Canada against American economic policies.

A C$100 million contract

The agreement between Ontario and Starlink was worth 100 million Canadian dollars, or about 68 million US dollars. The satellite connection service had been chosen to provide Internet access in the most remote areas of the province, which is the most populous in Canada and home to both Toronto and the federal capital Ottawa.

Economic tension between Canada and the United States

The cancellation of the contract comes amid growing trade tensions between the two countries. Canada has already expressed strong opposition to the new tariffs imposed by the United States and is considering further economic countermeasures. Ontario’s decision could be the first sign of a tightening of relations between the two North American nations.
